In-Laws of Mary Whitney Huyler, wife of John Elsworth

John Elsworth(4) >Henry Elsworth(3) >Samuel Elsworth(2) >Benjamin Elsworth(1)

John Elsworth's parents: Henry Ellsworth and Hannah Coleman

Hannah Coleman was the daughter of Joseph Coleman, of Goshen, Orange Co. NY
marriage certainly took place no later than 1771/1772 and perhaps as early as 1764/1765 (if she was his only wife)

marriage is unquestionably proven by the Will of Joseph Coleman of Goshen Precinct, Orange Co. NY (Orange County Will Lib.B., pg. 210), which cites Hannah, wife of Henry Elsworth, as "my daughter" as a beneficiary. This Hannah Coleman b. 1739, was Joseph Coleman's eldest child.

There is, (so to speak), a "fly in the ointment" which researchers need to be aware of. The LDS-IGI under New York - Elsworth, lists Henry Elsworth as marrying at Cornwall, Orange Co. NY, 11 July 1779 a Mary Salmon. No such record exists anywhere in Cornwall. But in the original Goshen Presbyterian Church records is found: 11 July 1779, Joseph Coleman married Mary Salmon. This was the second marriage of Joseph Coleman and the witness to the marriage was Henry Elsworth, his son-in-law.

The Hannah Curtis/Henry Elsworth marriage has been perpetuated for years and published over and over. This is part of the problem that Elsworth researchers encounter when using German Ellsworth's book.

I believe that the marriage of Henry Elsworth and Hannah Coleman is adequately proven by the Will of Joseph Coleman and the fact that Henry is witness to his father-in-law's second marriage.

The Nodaway Democrat, Maryville, Nodaway Co.,
MO, Thurs., 6 Feb. 1879

Mrs. Mary Ellsworth, mother of Daniel and Henry Ellsworth, died on February 1, at her residence, three and a half miles southeast of Maryville, after a week's sickness of pneumonia fever. She was eighty-two years of age last December, and was remarkably hale and hearty up to the time of her last sickness. Her remains were buried in the White Cloud Baptist cemetery on last Sunday, Elder J.H. Best preaching the funeral sermon. Mrs. Ellsworth had been a member of the Baptist church for fifty years and was a pious Christian woman. Her father, John Huyler, served with Gen.Washington through the revolutionary war, and witnessed the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. He also served through the War of 1812, and when the Mexican war broke out, though too old and feeble to enter the army, such was the strength of his patriotism and love of country that he cried because he could not go into the army to fight more battles under the old flag. He was a noble type of man and his daughter inherited largely of his excellent traits. Truly a good woman was gone to her reward.
